Napier research into social media use – preliminary results

June 30th, 2009 by Mike | No Comments | Filed in Misc Marketing

I started work on a project to look at the use of social media by engineers some months ago, which has produced some interesting results. We’re sponsoring research that is being conducted by Chichester University and although the fuill analysis won’t be available until the end of July, I wanted to share some of the initial results with you.

To date we have received almost 300 responses to the survey, providing a sample size that is more than sufficient to draw clear conclusions. Some of the provisional results are:
61% believed social media was a useful business tool, although 28% were blocked from using these tools at work
30% currently use social media for work, 44% for personal reasons, but a surprising 46% don’t use social media at all
Only 5% use Twitter more than once a week, whereas 28% are frequent users of Facebook
Linkedin is the clear choice for business use, with 24% using the site more than once a week
The most popular form of social media for business use are forums, with 45% of the respondents using forums for business purposes.

The results will be available in a month’s time, so if you want to make sure your get a copy of the report when it is available, please email me.

alexander-dixon-rainesEveryone at Napier turned into complete softies yesterday when Alexis, who recently provided maternity cover for the irrepressible Emma, brought Alexander into work. Alexander is Alexis’ second child, with a wonderful calm temperament – not a single cry or whinge, even when I was holding him!

Does location matter?

March 25th, 2009 by Mike | No Comments | Filed in News About Napier

As someone who is lucky enough to live and work by the sea and next to the wonderful South Downs, which are soon to be designated a national park, I definitely believe location is important. When it comes to business, however, I believe that communications technology makes the location of your office pretty irrelevant. Yet we’ve just opened an office in London. So how do I explain the need for a London office? Um… can I get back to you on that one?

Napier research in the press

March 2nd, 2009 by Mike | No Comments | Filed in News About Napier

Thanks to elektronik + embedded systems who published an article about Napier’s recent distribution survey in the distribution feature in their first issue of this year. Our research was picked up by experienced freelance journalist Theo Van Gelder, who wrote a great article on the subject. Although I write a fair number of articles that get published with client bylines, it is always nice to get a credit in print!

Napier electronica 2008 editors’ dinner

November 19th, 2008 by Mike | No Comments | Filed in Shows, Conferences and Events

We had a fabulous time on the Thursday night of electronica at our editors’ dinner. With 50 attendees, it was the biggest editors’ dinner we had organised at the show, and we just squeezed everyone into the fabulous restaurant owned by Alfons Schuhbeck. We even managed to get a nice mention in Mick Elliott’s EPN DistiBlog.

Congratulations to the winners in the raffle, which was sponsored by Microchip: Heinz Arnold editor-in-chief of Markt & Technik (iPod Nano), Achim Scharf editor of Power Electronics Europe (Digital Camera), and Andrea Gillhuber of Elektronik (Wii and Wii Fit).

For photos and more information about the event, visit our editors’ dinner web page.

Napier News moves to WordPress

October 29th, 2008 by Mike | No Comments | Filed in News About Napier

An agency that is advising clients on the latest online marketing techniques and tools probably shouldn’t be running a Blogger-hosted blog! Although Blogger was great for simplicity and speed – and in practice most of you read our monthly email rather than visiting the blog – I’ve finally found moved Napier News to a different platform.

I managed to find a surprisingly short amount of time in between the many cool projects I’m working on for our clients to install WordPress, and in the future I hope to use Napier News as a demonstration of some of the neat things you can do with a blog. Currently I’ve set up a very simple blog template, similar to our Blogger template, but hope to try different layouts, widgets and features in the future. Keep checking Napier News to see whether I can squeeze out time to doe it!
